Renowned Pakistani Mountaineer Dies in Ice Climbing Accident
Daulat Shah, 31, plummeted to his death while scaling a frozen vertical face in Hunza district within the picturesque Gilgit-Baltistan territory, accompanied by an international climber on Saturday, the Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed.
The elite alpinist suffered critical trauma from the fall and was pronounced dead at the location where he landed, authorities said. Rescue volunteers subsequently retrieved his remains and transported them to a state medical facility.
Shah had conquered four of the world's most formidable summits exceeding 8,000 meters (26,246 feet), including K2—Earth's second-loftiest mountain—along with Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum-II, and Gasherbrum-I.
His 2025 ascent of Gasherbrum-I was accomplished without supplementary oxygen, marking a significant achievement in high-altitude mountaineering.
The Gilgit-Baltistan region, which shares a frontier with China, contains five of the planet's 14 ultra-prominent peaks rising above 8,000 meters.
Multiple climbers have lost their lives in recent years attempting to scale the perilous mountain ranges dominating this hazardous terrain.
